RESIDENTS’ COunCIL

Residents’ Council is independent from Belmont’s administration and staff.  Every resident of Belmont is a member of Residents’ Council.  Administrators, staff, and residents strive to be a compassionate community through compliance with the Residents’ Bill of Rights.  These rights are specified in the law that regulates all long-term care homes in Ontario, Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 (FLTCA 2021).

The mission of the Council is to educate residents about their rights and obligations and to monitor community compliance with the Bill of Rights.  The Council represents and advocates for residents’ interests, needs, and concerns.  It has the right to review Ministry inspection reports and summaries, written plans for compliance, the detailed allocation of funding, the home’s financial statements and operation.  It works with administrators and staff to resolve disputes involving residents.  Council can report to the Ministry of Long-Term Care concerns and recommendations which, in the Council’s opinion, ought to be brought to the Ministry’s attention.

Residents’ Council can sponsor and plan activities, engage in fundraising, and collaborate with community groups.  It can exercise any powers provided in FLTCA, 2021, such as reviewing menus, meals and snack times, quality improvement and emergency preparedness plan, etc
